Ava has read and performed her poems to audiences
and book clubs all over the United States and Canada. Her poems
are funny, sad, spooky, lively, approachable, and always appealing.
She invites questions and an understanding of the art form.
Her first full length book, THE STRICT ECONOMY OF FIRE, is a wilderness
adventure, a backpacking trek of 15 American women into the Kingdom
of Nepal.
KITCHEN HEAT, Ava's second book, is a collection
of poems springing from the frustrations, joys, and surprises
of young married life-child rearing, burned toast, failed recipes,
and frantic appeals to a remembered grandmother who seemed to
know what she was doing. Both books are from Louisiana State University
Press.
Ava travels around the country doing readings of her poems. In
addition to these readings, she offers
workshops in poetry writing. Typically for beginners who are interested
in personal growth through self-expression (rather than those
who are striving to become professional writers), the workshops
can be tailored to a variety of time schedules and ages. An experienced
teacher, Ava combines movement, voice, and simple drawing to free
up the words that want to come flowing out.
